Reverend Dr. William F. Cleves

President of Thomas More College (1992-2001)

Father William F. Cleves began his academic career as a lecturer in philosophy at St. Pius X Seminary, later joining Thomas More College in 1983. His teaching emphasized metaphysics and ethics, blending rigorous philosophical method with pastoral insight. In 1987, he was named the Outstanding Full-Time Teacher of the Year and became known for his clear and compassionate approach to teaching. He rose through the academic ranks to become Associate Professor before being appointed President of Thomas More College in 1992. 

As President, Cleves emphasized community healing, academic excellence, and the integration of Catholic social teaching into institutional life. His leadership style was characterized by humility, accessibility, and a focus on fostering dialogue throughout the campus community. 

During his presidency, Father Cleves oversaw significant growth and modernization at Thomas More College. His tenure was characterized by institutional renewal, enhanced academic programming, and stronger community partnerships. Thomas More College achieved significant institutional growth through a successful capital campaign that nearly doubled its endowment, expanded academic opportunities with the introduction of the TAP accelerated B.B.A. and M.B.A. programs for working adults, and enhanced campus life through the construction of the Holbrook Student Center and improved athletic facilities. He also strengthened partnerships with the Diocese of Covington, local parishes, and civic organizations, played an active role in regional initiatives such as Vision 20/20 and the Educational Alliance of Northern Kentucky, and promoted a mission-centered student experience emphasizing community engagement and service.

Cleves’s presidency reflected his conviction that education is both a spiritual and intellectual vocation. His inaugural address, “The Truth Will Make You Free,” called the college community to pursue knowledge illuminated by faith. Known for his quiet confidence and pastoral care, he saw his role as a healer, uniting faculty and staff under a shared mission of Catholic humanism and service. 

In June 2000, Father Cleves announced his decision to step down after eight years as president, expressing his desire to return to pastoral ministry and teaching. He was appointed Vice-Chancellor of Thomas More College and continued to represent the College publicly while resuming pastoral duties in the Diocese of Covington. His post-presidential work emphasized liturgical ministry, retreat leadership, and theological writing.
