Current List of Transfer Equivalencies

The Transfer Equivalency System (TES) is designed to allow prospective students to see how the college credits they’ve earned at other institution(s) will transfer to Thomas More to complete their four-year degree. The list may be used to determine likely transfer, however it is not a guarantee that coursework will be automatically awarded as credit.

If you do not see your institution or your course, we don’t have a current equivalency established. Those courses will be assessed upon submission of your official transcript to the admissions office.

Transfer Credit Policies

Thomas More University accepts credits from any post-secondary degree-granting institution of higher education accredited by one of the six regional accrediting associations recognized by the U.S. Department of Education:

  • Higher Learning Commission (HLC)
  • Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE)
  • New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc., Commission on Institutions of Higher Learning (NEASC-CHE)
  • Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU)
  • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges (SACS-COC)
  • Western Association of Schools and College, Accreditation Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities (WASC-SCUC)
  • Western Association of Schools and college, Accrediting Commission for Community Colleges and Junior Colleges (WASC-ACCJC)

Courses taken at post-secondary institutions of higher education not accredited by one of the six regional accrediting associations will be considered on an individual basis. To check the status of an institution’s accreditation, please visit the Department of Education.

If you are transferring from an international institution, please see our International Admission page for more information.

Transfer Credit Guidelines

·         Courses must be completed with a grade of C- or higher to be eligible for transfer.

·         No credit will be awarded for classes below the 100-level.

Maximum Transfer Credits Accepted

·         From a 4-year institution: up to 90 credits

·         From a 2-year institution:

o    Up to 60 credits without an associate degree

o    Up to 70 credits with an associate degree

Credits may be combined from multiple schools but cannot exceed these limits.

Important Note
Even if you transfer in 90 credit hours, this does not guarantee you’ll graduate in 30 additional hours or two semesters. Program requirements vary, and not every course is offered each term. Your exact timeline to graduation will be determined once your credits are officially evaluated and you’ve met with an academic advisor.

After transcripts are received, the Registrar, using faculty-approved course equivalencies, provides an evaluation. Students will be notified once the evaluation is complete.
Grade point averages (GPAs) from other institutions do not transfer to Thomas More. A Thomas More GPA will be established after a student’s first semester of classes. Courses with a Pass/Satisfactory grade will typically only be accepted as general elective credit only.

Students who complete state general education requirements at a public two- or four-year college in Kentucky, Ohio, or Indiana meet Thomas More’s core requirements— except for 4 hours of philosophy and 6 hours of theology. Equivalent transfer courses in those areas will be accepted. Additional general education courses may be required if needed for a specific major or if a higher grade is required. Students without state certification will have courses reviewed individually.

The FYE requirement is waived for traditional transfer students with 24+ credits. Those with fewer than 24 credits must complete FYE unless they’ve already taken an equivalent course elsewhere.

Students must earn at least 25% of their credit hours through instruction offered by Thomas More University, exclusive of transfer credit and credit earned through the consortium program.

In order to earn a degree in a specific major, students must complete at least 18 of the required major hours from Thomas More for a bachelor’s degree or 9 hours for an associate degree.

Thomas More University accepts some extra-institutional learning credit based on the recommendation of the American Council on Education (ACE). Extra-Institutional Learning includes, but is not limited to: ACE, RECALL, CLEP, Dantes, Challenge Test, and credit for work or professional training, including military training.

Of the accepted number of transfer credits listed above, the maximum number of credits awarded for “extra-institutional learning” which may be applied to a bachelor’s degree is 60, to the associate degree is 30, and to the certificate is 8.
