Lazorchak<BR>Aquatic Ecologist/Toxicologist<BR>Manager, Aquatic Research Facility<BR>United States Environmental Protection Agency<P><BR>Tuesday, August 03 at 7:00pm<BR>Thomas More Biology Field Station<P>(For directions, visit: <a href="http://www.thomasmore.edu/fieldstation">www.thomasmore.edu/fieldstation</a>)<P>From the decline of amphibians, the feminization of male fish to other adverse effects,<BR>including those affecting human health, emerging contaminants are on the rise.<BR>This seminar will explain what Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs)<BR>are and some of the biological approaches to assess their exposure and<BR>effects to aquatic life. The term CECs has been used since the 1990s to<BR>identify chemical compounds that have no regulatory standard, have been<BR>recently &#8220;discovered&#8221; in natural streams because of improved analytical<BR>chemistry detection levels, and potentially cause deleterious effects in<BR>aquatic life at environmentally relevant concentrations. Several case<BR>studies will be presented that assess estrogenic exposure and effects<BR>found in laboratory, field deployments, experimental streams and one<BR>worldwide-recognized, whole-lake dosing experiment.</div><P><hr width="75%" align="center"><BR><p>Dr. Lazorchak is the Acting Chief of the Molecular Indicator Research Branch and Manager of the Aquatic Facilities at the USEPA Office of Research & Development.
