Where Is Your Future?

The first three years of the program are accomplished at Thomas More College and give the student a strong background in biology, chemistry, and the liberal arts. During the third year, the student will apply to the School of Medical Technology at nearby St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center. She/he will spend the final (fourth) undergraduate year taking classes in this program. The program accommodates only four students each year and consists of laboratory-centered courses (see below) in which the individual is able to progress to processing actual patient samples while still a student. The student will receive his/her degree in Medical Technology from TMC.

What Is Medical Technology?

Medical Technologists may be found in laboratory settings within a hospital, pharmaceutical company, or research institution. They may specialize in Clinical Chemistry, Microbiology, Hematology, Tissue typing, Serology, Cytology, or Histology. Others may choose to be generalists, rotating between the various specialties. Medical Technology gives an individual the background not only to perform highly technical manipulations, but also to pursue graduate or medical school, in much the same way as if the individual possessed a biology major.

Thomas More College is affiliated with the Clinical Laboratory Program of Saint Elizabeth Hospital, Covington, Kentucky. The Med Tech Program at St. Elizabeth is accredited by the National Accreditation Agency for Clinical Lab Science (NAACLS) of Chicago, IL. After completing the course work required by Thomas More College, the student spends his/her senior year at the hospital. This is a twelve-month program of professional study, generally beginning in July after their junior year (or January). Course work at the hospital is in the following areas (see catalog or link above for further description):

  • Clinical Chemistry
  • Special Chemistry
  • Urinalysis
  • Microbiology
  • Hematology
  • Immunohematology
  • Serology
  • Cytology/Histology Techniques

Where Will You Go?

The study of medical technology prepares students to be an essential member of the health care team employed in the clinical laboratory. A medical technologist performs and evaluates chemical, hematologic, microscopic, bacteriologic, and immunologic tests on biological specimens taken from patients for use in detecting, diagnosing, treating, and preventing diseases. Tests include highly automated analyses and complex protocols. Occupational possibilities in Medical Tech include:

  • Hematologist
  • Immunologist
  • Medical Assistant
  • Microbiologist
  • Pharmacy Technician
  • Sales Representative
  • Science Laboratory Assistant
