Additional courses in the biological sciences are often recommended as well.
Completion of at least 90 semester hours is required; ~95% of students who enter a college of podatric medicine have a baccalaureate degree.
In addition to these courses, applicants are expected to take the MCAT (Medical College Application Test) which is given twice a year (usually April and August). The MCAT will asses the students knowledge in three basic areas: Verbal Reasoning, Biological Sciences (Biology and Organic Chemistry) and Physical Sciences (Physics and General Chemistry. The MCAT also includes a Writing Sample Section. Some podiatric colleges are now accepting GRE scores in lieu of MCAT scores; please check the policy of each individual college.
Evidence of exposure to the podiatric medical/clinical setting is also important. It is recommended that students wishing to attend podiatric medical school volunteer/work in an medical environment (hospital, clinic, physician’s office, etc.) and shadow a podiatrist.
