Requirements/Recommendations for Admission to Physician Assistant Master Degree Program

Physicians Assistant Master’s Degree Program are generally 2 years programs. Since these programs can vary significantly in admission requirements, it is best to look at the specific school’s requirements. However, to obtain a general idea of the requirements, those for the program offered by the University of Kentucky are given below. (To see The Medical College of Ohio’s requirements, see web link):

University of Kentucky:
Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies

  • Course requirements for admission to UK’s Physicians Assistant Master’s Degree Program (need a C or better in all of the following courses):
    • Genral Biology (with lab)
      1 semester(4 credit hours)

    • General Chemistry (with lab)
      1 semesters (4 credit hours)

    • Organic Chemistry (with lab)
      1 semester(4 credit hours)

    • Human Physiology
      1 semesters

    • Human Anatomy
      1 semester

    • General Psychology
      1 semester

    • Developmental Psychology
      1 semester

    • Sociology/Anthropology
      1 semester

    • Medical Terminology
      1 semester

    • Microbiology
      1 semester

  • Completion of a baccalaureate degree is required
  • Other Requirements: Three letters of recommendation, an admission essay, certification in Basic Life Support by the American Heart Association, compliance with the Technical Standards established by the College of Allied Health Professions.
  • Must take the GRE; minimum of a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
  • Evidence of exposure to the medical/clinical setting is also important. It is recommended that students wishing to attend the physician assistant program volunteer/work in a medical environment (hospital, clinic, physician’s office, etc.) and shadow physician assistants.
