Biomedical Research
A degree from Thomas more College can lead to exciting opportunities in
the general field of medical research. Some specific areas include, but are not limited to:
Cellular and Molecular Biological Research
Molecular Genetics, Biochemistry and Microbiology Research
Biomedical Engineering
Molecular, Cellular, and Biochemical Pharmacology Research.
Students pursuing a career in any one of the fields of Biomedical Research
typically obtain a four-year B.S. or B.A. degree in Biology, Chemistry,
or related fields. After completing their degree, a student will apply to the graduate
education division of a medical college.
Upon acceptance, the student will perform some
coursework, and focus in on a specific research project guided by a research advisor. A
typical tract is between 4-6 years of biomedical research. After completion of all work,
the medical college issues the appropriate degree (usually Ph.D.) in the specific
discipline.
Although these students perform work at a medical college, they are not
licensed to practice medicine (Unless admitted under a special dual Ph.D/M.D. program).
Typically, graduates go on to further research at government laboratories, private
corporations, and academic institutions.
