Requirements/Recommendations for Admission to Allopathic Medical School
Although specifics vary from school to school, the following are usually required of applicants:
Biology (with labs) 2 semesters
General Chemistry (with labs) 2 semesters
Organic Chemistry (with labs) 2 semesters
Physics (with labs) 2 semesters
English 2 semesters
Math (e.g., Calculus) 1-2 semesters (varies with school)
Additional courses in the biological sciences are often
recommended as well.
Completion of a baccalaureate degree is strongly
recommended (if not required) in most cases. It is not necessary to obtain a degree in
Biology (or any science) in order to apply to medical school; however completion of the
above courses is required.
In addition to these courses, applicants are expected to
take the MCAT (Medical College Application Test) which is given twice a year (usually
April and August). The MCAT will asses the students knowledge in three basic areas: Verbal
Reasoning, Biological Sciences (Biology and Organic Chemistry) and Physical Sciences
(Physics and General Chemistry). The MCAT also includes a Writing Sample Section.
Evidence of exposure to the medical/clinical setting is
also important. It is recommended that students wishing to attend medical school
volunteer/work in a medical environment (hospital, clinic, physicians office, etc.)
and shadow physicians.
