Career planning is a process. Anyone can complete the process in a short time, or a long time, and still return to the various steps over a period of years to further consider one's needs and goals.

Usually the first step in the process is Self Assessment. Actually, learning about oneself is the number one key to career planning. This step may include identifying one's interests, skills, values, and preferences.

The second step is Exploration, or learning about one's career and educational choices. This frequently involves gaining factual knowledge about careers or seeking hands-on work experiences.

Another step is the Preparation for entering a particular career or educational path. This could involve any of the many steps in the job search process.

Action Planning is a necessary step at all points of the career planning process. Being able to set goals, seeing a recommended plan of action, or thoughtfully answering personal career planning questions may be helpful.
