Saints Defeat PAC-Rival W&J, 8-1

(WASHINGTON, Pa.) - The Thomas More College women's tennis team defeated Washington & Jefferson College, 8-1, today (Saturday, October 10, 2009) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match at the Janet L. Swanson Tennis Courts in Washington, Pennsylvania.
With the win the Saints improve to 3-7 overall and 2-1 in the PAC and with the loss, the Presidents fall to 1-8 overall and 1-4 in the PAC.
The Saints took a 3-0 lead after doubles as they swept all three matches. Sophomore Lauren Race (Cortland Manor, N.Y./John F. Kennedy Catholic) and freshman Emily Wesselman (Union, Ky./St. Henry) won 9-7 at No. 1 doubles, junior Lindsey Burns (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) and junior Brittaney Knapp (Covington, Ky./Covington Latin) won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles and freshmen Jamia Stovall (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) and Sierra O'Bryan (Edgewood, Ky./Covington Latin) won 8-5 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play the Saints won five of the six matches. Race won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, Wesselman won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, Knapp won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4 singles, Stovall won 9-8, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and Burns won her No. 2 singles match by forfeit.
The Saints return to action tomorrow (Sunday, October 11) when they play Westminster College at 1 p.m. in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania.
