Ruzick places Third in PAC

ERIE, PA - Sophomore Joe Ruzick (Cincinnati, OH/LaSalle) placed third - the highest of any Thomas More player - as the Saints finished fifth in the Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament.

     Ruzick, the third season in first singles, posted the 6-3, 7-5 victory in the first round, then lost, 4-6, 1-6 in the semifinals. He came back in secure third place with a 6-2, 6-1 win. Three other players, freshman Evan Bryan (Villa Hills/Villa Madonna), sophomore Johnny Bergman (Foster/Pendleton County) and junior Garry Sheahan (East Castle, Ireland/East Castle), were all in competition in during the second day. All three players finished fourth in their respective flights - Bryan after a 1-6, 3-6 loss in fourth singles; Sheahan following a 0-6, 2-6 loss in fifth singles andn Bergman with a 2-6, 1-6 loss in sixth singles.

     The only doubles team to record a victory in the first round were Bergman and freshman Brian Muse (Bethel, OH/Bethel) in third doubles, and they finished fourth after a 5-8 loss.

Thomas More beats Bison

BETHANY, WV - Thomas More won two of three doubles matches and split the singles portion to post the 5-4 Presidents' Athletic Conference victory over Bethany. Thomas More improved to 3-3 overall, 1-1 in the PAC.

     Sophomore Johnny Bergman (Foster/Pendleton County) was the only TMC player to post wins in singles and doubles as he posted the 6-0, 6-1 victory in sixth singles and teamed with freshman Brian Muse (Bethel, OH/Bethel) to win in third doubles, 8-2.

     Freshmen Ben Osterhues (Villa Hills/Villa Madonna) and Evan Bryan (Villa Hills/Villa Madonna) teamed to record the 8-6 victory in second doubles. Sophomore Joe Ruzick (Cincinnati, OH/LaSalle) won in first singles, 6-2, 6-2 and senior David Sheeley's (Fairdale/Fairdale) 6-1, 6-1 victory in third singles wrapped up the Thomas More wins.

     Ruzick/Sheeley fell in first doubles, 8-6; Osterhues lost in second singles, 6-1, 7-6; Bryan fell in fourth singles, 6-7, 6-2 (10-2); and Muse lost in fiifth singles, 6-1, 7-5.

Saints Swept By jackets

HIGHLAND HTS - Thomas More dropped its Presidents' Athletic Conference opener to Waynesburg, 9-0, Saturday.

     Freshman Ben Osterhues (Villa Hills/Villa Madonna) fell in first singles, 6-0, 6-2; senior David Sheeley (Fairdale/Fairdale) lost in second singles, 6-0, 7-5; freshman Evan Bryant (Villa Hills/Villa Madonna) fell 6-1, 6-3 in third singles; junior Garry Sheahan (East Castle, Ireland/East Castle) lost in fourth singles, 6-0, 6-4; sophomore Johnny Bergman (Foster/Pendleton County) lost in fifth singles, 6-0, 6-1; and freshman Brian Muse (Bethel, OH/Bethel) fell in sixth singles, 6-1, 6-0.

     In doubles action, Sheeley/Muse dropped a 8-1 decision in first doubles; Bryant/Osterhues fell, 8-1, in second doubles; and Sheeley/Bergman fell in third doubles, 8-3.

Thomas More nets First Win

Junior Garry Sheahan (East Castle, Ireland/East Castle) earned his first career singles victory and added a doubles win as Thomas More posted a 7-2 victory over Miami-Middletown Tuesday at Five Seasons.

     Sheahan was victorious in second singles, 8-1, after combining with freshman Brian Muse (Bethel, OH/Bethel) in a second doubles victory. In third singles, sophomore Johnny Bergman (Foster/Pendleton County) earned the victory, 8-1. Senior John Resch (Louisville/Trinity) won his first-ever singles match in fourth singles with a 6-1, 6-1 decision.

     Senior David Sheeley (Fairdale/Fairdale) fell in first singles, 5-8, and combined with Evan Bryant (Villa Hills/Villa Madonna) in the first doubles defeat, 5-8.

     Thomas More (1-2) is scheduled to host Wilmington Thursday.

Saints drop two

BEREA - Sophomore Joe Ruzick (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) recorded the lone singles victory for Thomas More as the Saints dropped a pair in the Berea Tri-Match, falling to host, Berea, 6-3, and falling to Oakland City, 9-0, Saturday.

     Ruzick posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory in first singles in the season opener against Berea. It helped Thomas More opened up a 3-1 lead as it claimed two of the three singles matches. Ruzick and senior David Sheeley (Fairdale/Fairdale) were victorious in first doubles with a 9-7 decision, and junior Garry Sheahan (East Castle, Ireland/East Castle)/sophomore Johnny Bergman (Foster/Pendleton County) combined for the third doubles victory, 8-5.

     Freshman Ben Osterhues (Villa Hills/Villa Madonna)/freshman Evan Bryant (Villa Hills/Villa Madonna) fell in second doubles, 2-8. In singles action, Osterhues fell, 2-6, 6-3, 5-7 in second singles; Sheeley fell, 4-6, 0-6 in third singles; Bryant lost 2-6, 3-6 in fourth singles; Sheahan lost 4-6, 6-3, 6-7 (8-6) in fifth singles; and Bergman lost 0-6, 0-6 in sixth singles.

     Ruzick suffered his first loss of the season, falling 0-6, 1-6; Osterhues fell, 0-6, 0-6; Sheeley dropped a 1-6, 0-6 decision; Bryant lost, 0-6, 1-6, Sheahan fell, 3-6, 6-4, 10-8; and Bergman lost 3-6, 3-6.

     In doubles, Ruzick/Sheeley lost 1-8; Osterhues/Bryant fell, 0-8; and Sheahan/Bergman lost, 7-9.
