Saints Sweep PAC Weekly Basketball Awards
(WEXFORD, Pa.) – Thomas More College swept the Presidents' Athletic Conference's (PAC) weekly basketball honors as senior guard Romell Salone (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut HIlls) was named the PAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week and senior guard Jayme Thiem (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) was named the PAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday (February 16, 2009) by the conference office.
Salone averaged 12.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game last week and also dished out a team-high six assists and recorded four steals. Against Washington & Jefferson College he scored a game-high tying 16 points and made four-of-six free-throws over the final 18 seconds and stole a President in-bounce with 16 seconds to play to seal the victory that clinched the Saints the No. 1 seed in the upcoming PAC Tournament. Salone followed up the W&J game by scoring nine points, pulling down seven rebounds and having a team-high five assists and four steals in the Saints’ win over Geneva College.
Salone and the rest of the Saints return to action on Saturday (February 21, 2009) when they close out the regular season in Latrobe, Pennsylvania with a 4 p.m. tip-off with Saint Vincent College.
Thiem earned her first PAC weekly honor this season after averaging 17.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game in two home victories for the conference-leading Saints. Against W&J she scored 12 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds to help lead the Saints to a win that clinched the them the No. 1 seed in the upcoming PAC Tournament and their fourth straight 20 win season. Thiem followed up that performance with a game-high 22 points and nine rebounds in the Saints’ win over Geneva.
Thiem and the rest of the No. 10-ranked Saints close out the regular season this week with two road games. They first travel to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Wednesday (February 18, 2009) for a 6 p.m. game with Chatham University and then travel to Latrobe, Pennsylvania on Saturday (February 21, 2009) to play Saint Vincent College at 2 p.m.
