Saints on the comeback
The Thomas More men’s basketball team finished the season at 11-16 and posted its first-ever Presidents’ Athletic Conference tournament victory by upsetting Westminster in the first round, 95-77.
The 11 wins marked an eight-win improvement over last season and more than doubled the win total of the previous two seasons combined. Part of the reason for Thomas More's success was the ability to win in the Connor Convocation Center. The Saints posted a 7-4 mark at home, while going just 3-11 on the road.
Junior transfers Mark Tinklenberg (Dublin, OH/Coffman) and Matty Owens (Mason, OH/Mason) helped bring a winning attitude and basketball toughness to the Saints. Tinklenberg, en route to second team Presidents’ Athletic Conference honors, led the team with 15.6 points and 6.7 rebounds. Owens was second on the team with 7.6 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
Senior Brad Buckner (Milford, OH/Milford), who earned honorable mention PAC honors for the second straight season, was third on the team with 7.2 points and 4.0 rebounds.
The 2007-08 season also saw several freshmen step into key roles, giving Thomas More fans a glimpse of a bright future. Johnny Bovard (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) started 21 games for Thomas More, averaging 6.0 points, while the trio of Kurt Bovard (Park Hills/Covington Catholic), Brian Muse (Bethel, OH/Bethel) and Eddie Brown (Hamilton, OH/Stephen T. Badin) all came off the bench for the Saints. In addition, several veterans - Matt Tierney (Louisville/Trinity), Jeremy Abell (Louisville/Trinity) and Romell Salone (Cincinnati, OH/Walnut Hills) provided key contributions.
The Saints had some impressive wins throughout the season, including victories over Washington & Jefferson, Bethany, Geneva and Saint Vincent – the former of which met in the PAC final. Geneva and Saint Vincent are provisional Division III members, and still have scholarship players on its rosters.

Thomas More upsets Titans
NEW WILMINGTON, PA - Thomas More got a case of the sticky fingers Tuesday as the Saints recorded 13 steals and forced 18 turnovers in posting its first-ever Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament victory, beating the fifth-seeded Westminster Titans at the Buzz Ridl Gymnasium, 95-77.
While the Saints were turning Westminster over with great frequency, Thomas More was protecting every possession - committing just six turnovers. For the second straight game, the point guard tandem of sophomore Romell Salone (Cincinnati, OH/Walnut Hills) and freshman Kurt Bovard (Park Hills/Covington Catholic) did an excellent job with a combined seven assists and just one turnover.
It was a true team effort as five players reached double figures in helping Thomas More secured the upset victory.
The Saints wasted no time in jumping on the hosts, and TMC led for 38 of the game's 40 minutes. Six different players scored during the Saints' 13-3 run early in the first half helping Thomas More to an 11-point lead. The lead grew to as much as 17 in the first half before settling in at 11 at the break.
Westminster quickly trimmed its deficit to five points, scoring nine of the first 12 points in the second half. However, the team-powered Saints had five players record baskets in a 10-0 run that pushed the lead to 15. The Titans would get as close as nine once, but Thomas More converted 17-of-18 at the free throw line to keep Westminster from harboring any thoughts of a comeback.
Junior Matty Owens <pictured> (Mason, OH/Mason) led Thomas More with 17 points, while junior Mark Tinklenberg (Dublin, OH/Coffman) added 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Salone was 3-of-3 from the field and 7-of-8 from the line to record 13 points and he added a team-high four assists. Freshmen Eddie Brown (Hamilton, OH/Stephen T. Badin) and Johnny Bovard (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) added 12 points and 10 points, respectively.

TMC stuns Bearcats
Saint Vincent walked into the Connor Convocation Center on a 13-game winning streak and 21-3 record. However, Thomas More was unfazed by those credentials, shook off a 16-point loss to SVC a month ago, and stunned the Bearcats, 85-63, Saturday.
The game was won on the defensive end as Thomas More held its opponent to 39 percent shooting, and owned the glass - winning the rebounding battle - 45 to 19. Junior Mark Tinklenberg (Dublin, OH/Coffman) and freshman Brian Muse (Bethel, OH/Bethel) led the way with seven boards each.
While the Saints did a superb job of limiting the bigger Bearcats to one-shot possessions, the point guard duo of sophomore Romell Salone (Cincinnati, OH/Walnut Hills) and freshman Kurt Bovard (Park Hills/Covington Catholic) were excellent in preventing Saint Vincent's fast break opportunities. They combined for 12 assists and just three turnovers while withstanding SVC's full court pressure.
Junior Matty Owens (Mason, OH/Mason) was a vital part of the Thomas More offense in the first half as he scored 12 of his 14 points. His points were supplemented by the offense of freshman Eddie Brown (Hamilton, OH/Stephen T. Badin), as TMC played the majority of the first half without leading scorer Tinklenberg - who was saddled with early foul trouble.
Saint Vincent had its only true threat as they shaved its 12-pont deficit in half just three minutes into the second half. However, senior Brad Buckner (Milford, OH/Milford) - in his final home game - went on a personal 9-0 run as Thomas More scored 16 of the next 19 points to open up a 19-point advantage.
Buckner finished the game with 16 points and four rebounds, while Brown added 15 points and four rebounds. Tinklenberg, whose two three-pointers moved him into second on the single-season list, chipped in with 10 points. He needs just two more three-pointers to tie Dustin Mulberry's mark of 61.
Thomas More (10-15 overall) will open the Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament 8 p.m. Tuesday at Westminster.

Thomas More falls to GC
BEAVER FALLS, PA - A three-pointer at the first half buzzer gave Geneva it first 10-point lead, and the Golden Tornadoes used that momentum to post the 77-68 victory over Thomas More Saturday. Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) member Geneva is a provisional NCAA Division III member, thus the game doesn't count against PAC standings.
The Saints still hold a half-game lead for a home game in the PAC tournament over Thiel and Westminster. Both schools have 4-7 records following the Titans' win over Thiel Saturday. Westminster travels to PAC-leader Bethany Wednesday in a pivotal PAC match. If Titans defeats Bethany, Westminster would be the fourth-seed virtue their win over Grove City. The Tomcats were eliminated from contention with the loss because Thomas More holds the tiebreaker virtue the Saints' win over Bethany.
Thomas More had trailed by as much as 20 late in the second half before the Saints scored the last 11 points of the game. The Saints converted 37 percent from the field, and just 52 percent from the line (14-of-27).
Junior Mark Tinklenberg (Dublin, OH/Coffman) led the Saints with 20 points and five rebounds, while senior Brad Buckner (Milford, OH/Milford) recorded his second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Thomas More (9-15) will wrap up its regular season 3 p.m. Saturday with a home game with Saint Vincent. It marks the final regular season home game for Buckner.

Comeback falls Short
WASHINGTON, PA - Trailing by 21 points in the second half, Thomas More turned to its full court defense and nearly pulled out the victory before falling to Washington & Jefferson, 70-65, Wednesday at Henry Memorial Center.
A victory would have clinched a home game in the Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament as the No. 4 seed for the Saints. Thomas More wraps up PAC action at 5-7, a game behind 4-6 Thiel and in a virtual tie with 3-7 Westminster. Thiel and Westminster will hook up Saturday in PAC action, in what amounts to an elimination game since Thomas More holds the tie breaker with both schools.
The Saints were able to pull to within three points and had several chances to tie the game down the stretch.
Thomas More forced 20 W&J turnovers, mostly in the second half, and shot 36 percent from the field. After missing their first 12 three-pointers, Thomas More connected on 5-of-10 down the stretch to finish at 5-of-22.
Junior Mark Tinklenberg (Dublin, OH/Coffman) led the Saints with 17 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Kurt Bovard (Park Hills/Covington Catholic) added nine points and four assists.
Thomas More (9-14 overall) will travel to Beaver Falls, PA for a non-conference game with PAC member Geneva. The Golden Tornadoes are a NCAA Division III provisional member thus the game doesn't count toward PAC standings.

Double-Digit Lead evaporates
GREENVILLE, PA - When freshman Eddie Brown's (Hamilton, OH/Stephen T. Badin) three-pointer at the buzzer fell off the mark, Thomas More fell to Thiel Wednesday, 64-61, at Beeghly Gymnasium in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) action.
Brown's attempt almost capped a late run in which Thomas More trimmed a nine-point deficit to one in a shade over two minutes down the stretch. Two Thiel free throws with 14 seconds remaining stemmed the tide enough for the Tomcats to eek out the win.
Thomas More led by 10 points at the break, and by as much as 11 in the second half before the home-standing Tomcats started on its trek back. Thiel took control of the game with a 23-2 spurt over an eight-minute stretch in the second half that gave TC the lead it wouldn't relinquish.
After holding the Tomcats to just 31 percent in the first half, Thomas More built its halftime lead. But, the Tomcats managed to hit 48 percent in the second half in posting the comeback victory.

During the pivotal 21-5 run that ended the first half, Miller scored 10 points with six rebounds, an assist and a block. Thomas More shot the ball with supreme marksmanship, connecting on 54 percent from the field, including a robust 58 percent in the second half. The stellar shooting display enabled the Saints to build its lead to as much as 15 points in the second half.
However, Geneva had one last run in it. Back-to-back three-pointers and a fast break lay-up pulled the visitors to within six points with a shade under two minutes left in the contest. A running jumper by junior Matty Owens (Mason, OH/Mason) and two free throws from freshman Eddie Brown (Hamilton, OH/Stephen T. Badin) halted any thoughts of a comeback.

Tinklenberg nets 30 in Loss
DANVILLE - Junior Mark Tinklenberg (Dublin, OH/Coffman) scored 30 points, 23 in the second half, but it wasn't enough as Thomas More had its three-game winning streak snapped with a 71-56 loss to Centre Tuesday.
Tinklenberg's performance couldn't overcome a cold evening for his teammates as they shot 10-of-43 (23 percent) from the field, including 2-of-8 from behind the arc. The futility stretched to the free throw line where, minus Tinklenberg, the team shot just four-of-14. Meanwhile, the junior forward connected on 10-of-18 from the field and 6-of-8 from the line. Tinklenberg also tied sophomore Romell Salone (Cincinnati, OH/Walnut Hills) for the team-high with eight rebounds.
Thomas More managed one point over a 12-possession span in the first half allowing the Colonels to stretch its advantage to 13 points going into halftime.
The Saints couldn't cut into the Centre advantage in the second half, and the Colonels pulled away late for the non-conference victory.
Thomas More (5-4 overall) will travel to Lexington, VA for the Washington & Lee Tournament on December 30 & 31.
Saints Stay Unbeaten in PAC

Sophomore Romell Salone (Cincinnati, OH/Walnut Hills) led a trio of double-figure scorers with a career-high 17 points. He added a team-high five assists and one steal in the victory.
Prolific shooting in the first half helped the Saints build a double-digit bulge as they shots 65 percent from the field, and 7-of-10 from behind the arc. Junior Jeremy Abell (Louisville/Trinity) stroked three for behind the arc in the first half, and finished the game with 13 points. Abell helped the Thomas More reserves outscore the Titan bench, 30-16.
The lead teetered around 14 until the Titans responded on a 15-4 run midway through the second half to trim their deficit to four points.
A rebound and subsequent three-point play by Salone energized the Saints, and when Salone later connected on back-to-back free throws - Thomas More's advantage was back to 12.
Junior Mark Tinklenberg (Dublin/Coffman) added 13 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and two blocks in the victory.
Thomas More (5-3 overall, 3-0 PAC) will take the week off for final exams before travel to meet Centre December 18.

Reserves, torid Shooting Spearhead Victory
It wasn't the usual cast of characters for Thomas More that helped rally the Saints, and post the 96-84 victory over Thiel Wednesday at the Connor Convocation Center.
Led by junior Daniel Ellis (Springfield, OH/South), who poured in a career-high 17 points, the Thomas More bench outscored its counterparts, 44-29. Junior Jeremy Abell (Louisville/Trinity) added a season-high 15 off the bench.
The quartet of Ellis, Abell, sophomore Aaron Miller (Lexington/Henry Clay) and freshman Brian Muse (Bethel, OH/Bethel), joined junior Mark Tinklenberg (Dublin, OH/Coffman) as Thomas More turned the game's 10th tie into a 10-point lead in less than three minutes. Ellis was the prime suspect in the offensive barrage as the sharp shooter knocked down three straight from behind the arc.
Ellis' marksmanship was just the tip of the iceberg for Thomas More as the Saints drilled nine straight three-pointers in a span in which they made 10 baskets. When the last of the nine fell through the basket, the Saints had built a 19-point lead. TMC connected on 11-of-14 from behind the arc in the second half.
Thomas More offensive prowess from long distance and its ability to turn the Tomcats over 22 times, helped TMC overcome 60 percent shooting from its visitors.
Tinklenberg led Thomas More with 19 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Senior Brad Buckner (Milford, OH/Milford) and junior Matty Owens (Mason, OH/Mason) added 14 and 13 points, respectively, as five players reached double figures.
