Mrs. Rebecca Schaffer Wells
Director of Choirs
Rebecca Schaffer Wells is excited to be part of the founding team developing Music studies at Thomas More College. Her Bachelor of Arts in History from Thomas More College created a perfect foundation for a varied and exciting career in Classical, Sacred, Jazz, Rock, and Commercial Music. Since 2005, Prof. Wells has earned the Bachelor of Music/Performance at Northern Kentucky University, and the Master of Music/Performance at Miami University (Ohio).
Prof. Wells has served as volunteer chorister from her teens at Covington Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption Bishop’s Choir, including the landmark tour to sing for Saint John Paul II in Rome (1986). She is grateful there to work with singers who started their choral experience with George Higdon (VMC choral director 1950s-1960s) and the early boys/mens choir at Cathedral, as well as several TMC choral graduates who have become life-long members of the Cathedral Bishop’s Choir. Earliest choral memories are at the dinner table with family, mother and father discussing early TMC choral concerts and Cathedral Basilica Advent Festivals, Midnight Masses, and Cathedral Concert Series events.
In addition to the TMC BA/History, Prof. Wells studied Jazz/Studio Music on the Baccalaureate level at UC/College-Conservatory of Music, earned the Bachelor of Music/Performance from Northern Kentucky University in 2005 and the Master of Music Performance from Miami University in 2007.
Choral teachers and mentors include Dr. Randy Pennington and Dr. Earl Rivers (choral conducting), Joe Simmons and Melodie Coddington (Cantor/Psalmody), and of course her parents, Dr. Robert J. and Rita Avram Schaffer (Robert was 40 year faculty at VMC/TMC and organist-Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra; Rita was Music Director, Episcopal Church of the Redeemer-Hyde Park/Cincinnati).
Professional experience includes singing with the Kentucky Symphony Chorus (Berlioz Requiem in the newly-renovated Covington Cathedral), serving as Cantor/Singer at regional weddings, as a cruise-ship bandleader, woodwind player/arranger/composer in musicals, professional big bands and concert bands (franksimonband.org), Kentucky Symphony and Blue Ash/Montgomery Symphony Orchestras, the School House Symphony and at Dee Felice Cafe and other Jazz rooms in the region. She has performed with TMC colleague Andrew Winner at the CCM Classical Guitar Summer Institute Faculty Recital, and in the “horn section” backing national acts Dave Brubeck, Fankie Valli, and Peter Cetera. Her work with National Pastoral Musicians includes performances for audiences of over three thousand at various national conventions.
Prof. Wells is excited to add her experience in Production, Training, Programming, Publicity, Contracting, Instrumental and Choral musicianship, and lifelong faith to the growing TMC Music team.
